Are you one of those people who never bothers to enter competitions because you never win anything? Me too. Here's a startling revelation, though – the more competitions you enter, the more chance you have of winning big.

Becoming a competition junkie is a fun and easy way to supplement your income. The prizes are often significant – holidays, groceries, appliances, even cash – while the entry process (which may involve completing a puzzle, answering a question or writing a short essay) can be enjoyable. Plus, there's the anticipation of waiting for the results.

Sherry Sjolander is an author and Competition Queen who claims to win $50 000 in prizes each year. Here are her tips for increasing your chances:

Join a comping club that lists all the competitions running Australia wide.

The easier a competition is to enter, the less chance you have of winning. Miss Sjolander recommends entering competitions in magazines that require you to fill out an entry form.

Limericks and rhymes work best for those 'in 25 words or less' competitions.
