The community effort to protect this endangered and beautiful species of butterfly is certainly something to be celebrated.

Thought to have been extinct since the 1950s, the Eltham Copper Butterfly was rediscovered in the Eltham area in 1987. Still a threatened species, it now thrives in three reserves located in Eltham.

Join the Friends of the Eltham Copper Butterfly, Friends of Woodridge Linear Reserve, Parks Victoria, Nillumbik Shire Council, Banyule City Council and Eltham East Primary School on Father's Day this year as they celebrate this achievement.

Browse the Edendale Nursery plant sales, market stalls and community art projects on display.

For the kids there will be plenty of activities and entertainment, including face painting and the fabulous Eltham Copper Butterfly playground right next door.

Make a family day of it and pop down the road to the Diamond Valley Railway ($3 per ride, runs 11am - 5pm every Sunday).

Plan ahead and register for the Hohnes Hill Walk Talk and Galk online or by calling 03 9433 3316.

The walk leaves from the Council tent at the festival at 11.30am and 1pm. Learn more about the Eltham Copper Butterfly in its native habitat as well as the Notoncus Ant and the Sweet Bursaria plant.
