When I was living on Pakington Street (or "Pako") in Geelong I decided to get fit by running daily. With Geelong being so picturesque it was easy to focus on my breathing and allow my subconscious to take over; the physical exertion of running enough to drive out any lingering concerns from the workday.
Unfortunately my efforts were thwarted when, unburdened by conscious control, I would inevitably end up at a burger joint, a fried chicken outlet or, the focus of this article, at at the tranquil waterfront.
in English translates to "the snack red" (if you trust online automated translation) and is a small fishing boat serving takeaway meals moored at the jetty in Geelong Harbor at the waterfront. The bright red, bobbing sign is difficult to miss.
For $7 you can get a Chinese takeaway box of steamed mussels served in three varieties:
- Red wine, tomato and chilli
- White wine, garlic and parsley
- Natural with lemon
Also available is a $10 plate of seafood paella (the seafood usually comprising a single prawn and 4-5 mussels), salt and pepper calamari with chips for the same price as well as $7 for 5 prawns with garlic and chilli sauce. Cans of drink and cups of hot chips are also available.
The service is quick and friendly, and I've found all the mussels to be delicious. I've only ordered the seafood paella once and found the rice on that occasion to be more overdone than I'm accustomed to, however the flavours were excellent.
If you're in Geelong and down at the waterfront looking for a fresh, reasonably priced and delicious takeaway with the novelty value of being a food-boat, is highly recommended.
Opening hours are Lunch Monday to Sunday and Dinner on Friday and Saturday.
