Determined to find a decent restaurant that was on the way home from work, I came across Edamame in St Lucia on the Internet. Despite various positive reviews, I was still a bit iffy about this place. Nevertheless, being optimists, my husband and I dragged our famished bodies to Edamame one Friday evening and it blew us out of the water.

It has been a while since I've been on Hawken Drive in St Lucia and boy, has it changed. We sat down and the waitress soon arrived with a big smile and tattered menus. I must admit, it was a bit gross flipping through the damp, ripped and faded menu; however that was the least of my worries as I wanted to satisfy my grumbling tummy ASAP.

Meal accompaniments included over two dozen small dishes: pan fried, deep fried, grilled and steamed; and various interesting salads and soups. Mains included several types of hot pots; three types of noodle varieties: sauce base, pan-fried base, and soup base, with many choices for toppings and noodles as well as numerous rice dishes. I was quite impressed to see that they've dedicated three pages of their menu to noodles. I must say flipping through these yukky menus didn't suppress our appetite at all.

We ordered chicken karaage, calamari karaage, pork edamame yakisoba with okonomiyaki (pancake), and pork katsudon.

Both karaage dishes came first and I was pleasantly surprised by their presentation. Chicken was piled up in the middle of the dish with seaweed strips, sesame seeds and bonito flakes sprinkled on top accompanied by a little salad and a blob of mayonnaise. It looked so mouth-watering. Extremely excited about what was in front of me, I quickly took a bite expecting to hear a crunch … except I didn't. Even though the batter was a bit doughy, it had all the right flavours for me. So tick.

On the other hand, the calamari batter was crunchy and light and this was my hubby's favourite. Another tick.

Pork edamame yakisoba and pork katsudon were an eye full. It was so tasty I had one mouthful after another ignoring the fact that I was already full.

All in all, I would definitely go back to Edamame for their scrumptious and affordable food. It is for those wanting to sit down to an authentic Japanese meal in a casual dining atmosphere. Its cuteness, warmth and yummy food will have us coming back for more in no time.
