Fri 17 Jan 2014 - Tue 15 Apr 2014

Organised by the Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA), ecoflicks is a film festival that promotes and encourages aspiring filmmakers. Although based on the Sunshine Coast and financially supported by Sunshine Coast Council and SEQ Catchments, the festival is open to entries from all ages throughout Australia.

With the next generation in mind, the festival is about "People with Passion Sharing a Vision" and is a celebration of creative talent that inspires environmental stewardship. The aim of the festival is to communicate local environmental stories and messages achieved by grassroots actions/groups/individuals. In other words, celebrating who and what is making a difference to the environment in our community.

Budding filmmakers are asked to create and submit short films (three to five minutes) with environmental themes to captivate, inspire and enthuse viewers with their messages. Apart from promoting important environmental messages, what makes this film festival special is that tuition and mentoring support is provided for filmmakers to improve their skills and help develop their ideas through to fruition.

An example of this comes in the form of a free filmmaking workshop, being held on Saturday and Sunday 8-9th February 2014, 9am-5pm at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Sippy Downs, Faculty of Arts and Business DG. 43 Computer Lab Mac. You can book with NICA at [email protected].

Award categories include 'Best ecoflick' (Sunshine Coast filmmaker or a film about the Sunshine Coast region), 'Best Mobile Phone ecoflick' (Australia-wide); 'Best Student film' (under 18s), 'Runner-up Student film' (under 18s), 'People's Choice Award' and 'Best Local Soundtrack'. Sponsors for the event so far include the Original Eumundi Markets, The Outdoor Education Centre, Sunshine Coast Regional Council, SEQ Catchments, Outrigger Resort Noosa, Noosa Avalon Cottages and Qld Water and Land Carers (QWaLC).

Entries are due 15 April 2014. All details for 2014, including entry conditions and forms, str on the ecoflicks website .

Screenings of the winning entries will be held at World Environment Day (June) as well as at various other events throughout the year. The 2014 festival is the fifth year of this inspirational event, launched as a special screening of previous winning entries held at the Outrigger Theatrette in Noosa, November 2013. Previous entries can be viewed on YouTube .
