Brisbane is such a great place to live and there are so many options for entertaining the kids during school holidays. With the weather cooling down and fining up (fingers crossed), here are a few more exciting things to do.

1). Hang out with your grandparents

A great initiative of the Brisbane City Council is the GOLD 'n'kids series (GNK) which focuses on activities for residents over 50 and kids over four. GNK activities include a range of how to classes, from cooking, fishing, abseiling, golf, kayaking, guitar and drumming, clay figurines, stand up paddle boarding, rock climbing, art, orienteering, puppet making, beading and badge making. A really unusual activity that sounds like a lot of fun is Holding The Fort at Fort Lytton National Park, a drama based program run by professional actors and set in a real fort. The GNK activities are located all over Brisbane and are either free or have a minimal charge. Great for grandparents helping out over the holidays. Check out the council website here .

2). Explore Outer Space

If you have a rocket or space mad child the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium at the Mt Coottha Botanic Gardens will reopen for the school holidays after a major refurbishment and return to screening their wonderful short films. With options for children from aged 3 and up, there is something for everyone. There are various animated films such as Tycho to The Moon and Secret of the Dragon to options for older children, such as Stars of the Pharoahs and The Search for Life: Are We Alone?. Each film is followed by a guided tour of the Brisbane night sky by local planetarium staff. More details here

3. Get back to nature

Brisbane has a couple of wonderful environment centres that are hosting organised activities for children over the break. At the Boondall Wetlands, kids can learn about the Easter bilby and Boondall Birds through stories, wetland walks and craft activities. At Downfall Creek Bushland Centre kids can discover local Aboriginal culture, uses of local native plants, try bush tucker and weaving. For more details see the Brisbane City Council website

4. Get active

If you want to burn off some of your kids' energy so you can have your evenings back here are some great ideas. Rock climbing is a great adrenalin filled but safe activity and there are various indoor climbing centres throughout Brisbane. Just Google and you will find a range of options. If you have a budding acrobat there is a free circus workshop in King George Square on Thursday April 11. Details here

You could also try going for a hike around Mt Coot-tha or Brisbane Forest Park or go on a bike riding adventure through Boondall Wetlands, Kedron Brook or Toohey Forest. More info here

5. Get creative

Check out your local library for a great range of craft activities and the drop in Craft Bar, operating at many libraries every day. Several libraries are also offering scriptwriting and songwriting workshops for budding entertainers.

Sketch Creative on April 13th is a worldwide drawing event to be held at Eagle St. Come and join sketchers of all abilities draw the city as it is and how you'd like it to be. For more details visit Sketch Creative on Facebook .
