Ah, the seaside! Sunny skies and ocean breezes, misty blue vistas and sticks of sweet rock. Holidays by the seashore are a longstanding
British tradition, and never was there a prettier coastal resort than
Eastbourne. This delightful town with its carefully preserved seafront has been a popular tourist resort since Victorian times and even today there are echos of a bygone era.
Nestled at the foot of the
South Downs on the East Sussex coastline, it has earned the title of the sunniest location in the country after setting the record for the most hours of sunshine ever in England. Famous for its beaches, there's no less than seven from which to choose, including the dreamy
Falling Sands Beach beneath the chalk cliffs (this one's dog-friendly though pooches must be under control and don't forget to bag and bin).
There's tearooms, cafes, bars and restaurants galore, along with a wide range of shops and well as the modern Arndale Centre, all within a few minutes walk from the train station and the beach. Hotels and guest houses are to be found on every street, with accommodation to suit every budget. Eastbourne boasts a number of green and tranquil parks, and visible from many points in the town is the stunning
Beachy Head A walk up onto the downs to the top of the cliffs leads to a site of unrivaled breathtaking views (its sheer drop to the beach below has made it an infamous suicide spot).
It may have a sedate atmosphere but Eastbourne is alive with activity - whether the sun's out or not there's much to be enjoyed here. And visits need not be limited to summertime - the sheer beauty of the town and its surrounding area make perfect for a break at any
time of the year.
