You want to feel your best, its a special occasion. You don't often wear make up but today you want to impress. You're not quite sure where to start?

Natural beauty wins hands down but if you feel you must wear make up, you need to know how to wear it right!

Despite what guys may think applying makeup is not an ability all girls are born with. Here are a few tips I wish my best friends had passed to me during my "make up experimentation days".

Take advantage of the make up counter "demonstration" and free makeovers, try before you buy and have fun. You can learn a lot about your skin without spending money providing you can resist the sales patter. Once you feel you know your tones, colours and types, head to the local discount shop or chemist where you can buy everything you need / want at an affordable price.

Experimenting allows you to find what works best for you. Try using tinted moisturiser instead of foundation. It looks more natural and it's much easier to match to skin tones.

If you really don't know where to start when it comes to applying makeup check out the web, there are lots of sites with "how to" tips.

Do's and Don'ts of smart makeup application for beginners.

1} Wash your face before you apply makeup.

2} Use a moisturiser or foundation that has sunscreen included, this will help keep your skin looking natural.

3} If your lashes don't stay curled well, or you need to keep them curled for a long period of time, try blow drying your eyelash curler before using it.

4} Never attempt to copy another person's makeup, what looks good on them could look trashy on you.

5} Know your style and always remember the golden rule, "less is more". Keep it simple.

6} Make sure all of your selected colours go with your skin tone, eyes, and hair colour.

7} When choosing which eye makeup to wear, take the occasion and time of day into consideration.

8} If you're attending a ceremony which may make you cry, consider wearing waterproof mascara.

9} Apply mascara in layers, give each layer time to dry, finish off your eyelash look with a soft toothbrush, which will help to lift and separate.

10} Do your skin a favour and take time to remove all make up before going to bed. If you don't have eye makeup remover available use baby shampoo - at least it wont sting your eyes. If you're on a really tight budget petroleum jelly takes off eye makeup really well.

Most importantly, don't try to portray yourself as something you are not and don't apply make up with a view to getting noticed. Wearing your make up with style and confidence will be far more effective and memorable, whatever the occasion.
