Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, located within Brisbane's Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens, is home to a fantastic range of awe-inspiring immersive shows, interactive astronomy programs and fascinating displays for all the family to enjoy.Established in 1978, the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium is the biggest planetarium in Australia and continues to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.Amongst its many attractions is a full-size reproduction of Neil Armstrong's spacesuit, as well as other impressive displays related to the space programs of many nations, including the International Space Station. The Display Zone (which is spread across two areas) also takes visitors on an astronomical journey from the present day Solar System to the time of the Big Bang and showcases interesting artefacts including fragments of asteroids, spacecraft models and images from the Hubble Space Telescope.Another popular Planetarium attraction is the Cosmic Skydome, which underwent a major refurbishment in 2013. It now houses an optical star projector which offers full-dome, immersive presentations and guided tours of the Brisbane's night sky. This entertaining and educational experience is available for public audiences, school groups or other large groups.
Over at the Observatory, visitors can join the Planetarium's knowledgeable astronomers for a glimpse into the fascinating world of astronomy, while the Mini Theatre offers short feature shows on various astronomical topics and space missions.Complimenting the Planetarium is the Galaxy Gift Shop, where visitors can purchase a wide range of astronomy and general science merchandise, while the Sundial Courtyard is a great spot to sit, relax and take in the surrounds. The Planetarium aims to provide entertaining, educational programs for its visitors, as well as covering the Australian School Curriculum in the school programs by demonstrating the motions of how the sky moves from day to night, the workings of the Solar System and more. Today, virtually everyone benefits in some way from the use of assets in space developed during the Space Age, including remote sensing technology, communications satellites and GPS navigation.
Come and find out why the Planetarium is one of Brisbane's most unique and valued icons located in the Mt Coo-tha Precinct. Visitors can also spend the day in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens and Herbarium, with its local reserves, picnic areas, cafes and restaurants providing the perfect place for lunch.**For more information about the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, visit www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/Planetarium or for show bookings phone (07) 3403 2578.
