Dining at The Barracks

The Barracks (Petrie Terrace, Paddington) is a heritage listed site that was originally the Brisbane Petrie Terrace Gaol. In 2007, developers commenced work on turning the three buildings into a dining, retail and entertainment precinct. The Barracks opened a year later. The destination has nearly one dozen different restaurants, offering something for every taste.

Libertine Bar and Restaurant is a dining destination. The heritage listed dining room, with its dark wood floors, fringed chandeliers, long dining tables and gold leaf wall paper, is stunning and the food is fresh and affordable. Libertine offers a range of Asian influenced snacks, lunch and dinner as well as wine and cocktails. The restaurant is open from Tuesday to Sunday, with lunch starting at midday and dinner starting at 5.00pm. Bookings are essential and can be made online.

Italian eatery Pizzeria 1889 recalls the tale of Raffaele Esposito, the most revered pizza chef in Naples, and how his creation of the margherita pizza set the standard for today's pizza. Pizzeria 1889 determines to uphold Esposito's legacy. The pizzeria bakes pizzas in a wood fire brick oven and is a fully licensed dine in or takeaway venue.

And from the people who brought you Pizzeria 1889 comes Peasant. This restaurant serves up authentic Spanish and Portuguese meals and tapas amidst dramatic and moody decor. Wash down beef tartare and quail eggs or sardines in herb crumbs with a selection from the lengthy wine and cocktail menus. Peasant is open seven days a week for dinner and on Fridays and Sundays for lunch.

The Chelsea is a slice of New York taste and style. This bistro and wine bar serves a fusion menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner and provides a selection of Australian and European wines. For cheap eats, book in for the Fixed Price Luncheon, which includes two courses and a glass of wine for less than $35. The Chelsea is open from 7.00am, seven days a week.

If you've still got room for dessert, stop by Movenpick Ice Cream on your way out. The gastronomy ice cream brand stocks sorbets, frozen yoghurts and, of course, creamy ice creams. Movenpick originated in kitchens in Switzerland and still adheres to Swiss recipes and standards of perfection. Fresh ingredients, like vanilla pods from Madagascar, are used for flavouring.
