I fell in love with the Art Gallery of South Australia when first I unwittingly stumbled in on my mandatory tour of North Terrace as a new arrival in Adelaide.
I was welcomed by encouraging smiles from the friendly ladies on the reception desk and was directed towards the free guided tour that began at 2pm. The tour was given by a tiny elderly lady who bounced around the gallery, dashing from gorgeous painting to exquisite statue, brimming with enthusiasm to tell us about the artwork that she adored.
The gallery has a beautiful and thought provoking collection of art and the space itself is immaculate, with lovely polished floors and mindfully decorated rooms. Every single thing about the art gallery is the best it could possibly be; polished, well thought through and beautiful. I couldn't stop telling all the locals I met how marvellous their Art Gallery was.
Departure is an event held in the Art Gallery of South Australia quarterly, specifically for people in the 20s and 30s. It is designed to encourage everyone to enjoy the Art Gallery.
We went to the last Departure evening which was themed around the Art Gallery's special exhibition "Realms of Wonder" which was an exhibition of works from Asia. It was brilliant.
My husband is not a fan of art and groaned when I told him we were heading to the Art Gallery on a Friday night. We met there after work and there was already a big crowd of people.
All of Adelaide's most young and beautiful people were standing before us and we cringed as we looked down at ourselves in our work clothes. However we tried to ignore our own scruffiness and ventured in.
The restaurant had been transformed into a bar and Indian themed canapes were circulating around. Everywhere you looked there were interesting things to do. We were given some wine and spent a long time trying to make little Ganeshas out of plasticine while chatting to people. There were lots of young professional people there who said that they try to go to Departure whenever it is on.
We then went on a tour of the Realms of Wonder Exhibition and heard part of a talk by the curator of the exhibition. It was so civilised and interesting and a wonderfully unusual way to spend a Friday night. I had a henna tattoo painted on my hand and then the best of all... there were Bollywood dancers dancing in the outdoor area who were fantastic.
Then the dancers left and a DJ took over and there was a huge party with great music and a lovely happy atmosphere. It was also great to feel so smug about spending our Friday night at an Art Gallery but having so much fun.
Departure was a brilliant night and a fabulous way for people of our age to enjoy the Art Gallery and meet people in Adelaide. The next Departure event is this Friday, 21st March (Sold Out) and is based around the Dark Heart Exhibition. I am sure it is going to be another brilliant evening with lots of well thought through beautiful entertainment and art. Bookings are now open for Friday, 20 June, 2014.
The tickets for this event are $60 for non members and can be purchased
here .
My top tips are- dress up nicely but wear shoes you can dance in! Probably also better to eat before you come because it is tricky to catch the canapes as they circulate.
