"Grandmothers hold a special place in our hearts. They mould us with the wisdom of their years," begins the drinks menu at Delfina's Bistro located at the Emporium complex in Fortitude Valley, and named after the now deceased matriarch of this family business.

Bold wallpaper and décor in aqua, turquoise and teal greets you as you entire the breezy establishment. A quick wander about reveals two distinctly separate dining areas: one more private area that would be great for functions is adorned with a wall of picture frames hanging from a symbolic family tree, the other area is semi-circled with glass bi-folds opening out toward a small garden and beyond that, Ann Street.

One look at the menu made me question the addition of the word 'Bistro' to the restaurant's name, since, while the atmosphere was quite relaxed, the meals are those of a fine dining establishment: Oysters, Octopus, Ox Tail Tortellini, Confit Rabbit, Pork Belly, and Quail to name a few.

I visited Delfina's Bistro on my lunch break on a weekday, as I work nearby, but I really wish I'd had more time to spare. I felt impatience rising in my chest when things were taking a little time to arrive, but of course one can't expect everything to happen in a snap when dining at an establishment that takes such pride and care in the construction of the dishes.

Delfina's Bistro is really one of those places you should visit when you have a couple of hours to spare to languish over a long lunch or dinner. Or why not drop in to share tapas and drinks with friends in the beautifully decorated surrounds?

On my visit I enjoyed the Braised Beef from the lunch menu. While the beef was nice, the real star of that dish for my money was the warm potato and chorizo salad. I could have happily eaten an entire bowl of those potatoes! That was followed by the Chocolate Fondant, which is listed on the menu as 'Chocolate fondant, malt, milk'. Oh boy was that underselling the pudding! It was amazing; so many textures and delicious tastes all dancing around in my mouth. The crunch of the twill, the smooth, sweet ice cream, bitterness and warmth of the chocolate, biscuit crumbs and crushed nuts all added up to dessert perfection.

The staff were friendly and attentive, the tables were expertly set, and everything was beautifully clean and shiny. Just make sure you have plenty of time to sit back, relax and enjoy your visit to Delfina's Bistro, should you plan to dine there. I'd recommend it for a special family event like a birthday dinner, as the prices are very nice and the family theme would really suit.

Delfina's Bistro is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11.30am to 11pm for lunch, tapas and dinner. You can book online or call 3252 0214 to make a reservation.
