Defensive Driving Course

Published September 22nd 2010
A defensive driving course teaches vehicle mastery and how to react in emergency situations. The course helps younger drivers to develop safer driving techniques, and teaches older drivers how to correct bad habits and improve judgment. There are also financial benefits; some insurance companies offer a reduced premium once you have completed an approved driving course.

Driving Skills Australia provides several different courses, including Defensive Driving for L and P Platers and Four Wheel Drive courses. The driver training programs combine theoretical and practical teachings on developing safe driving behaviour, such as seating position, steering techniques and emergency braking. The DSA course costs $275 for the Defensive Driving program and $275 for the one day 4WD program. The courses take place on selected dates, at approved driver training facilities like Mount Cotton Training Centre and Willowbank Raceway.

Murcott's patented Defensive Driver Training Program is developed around a system called BAAMS, which holds that safe driving is dependent on Behaviour, Attitude, Awareness, Motivation and Skill. Students are taught hazard detection, automobile safety, vehicle dynamics and will receive a practical interpretation of all major road rules. This program is priced at $283.00 and takes place at Willowbank Raceway.

The Advanced Defensive and 4WD Centre provides a range of defensive driving courses, for four wheel drives and motorcycles as well as vehicles. Their Defensive Driving Course provides actual, on-road scenarios and teaches improved vehicle handling plus economical driving, which reduces running courses. Graduates of the Defensive Driving Course might like to move on to the On-Road Defensive Driving course. Both courses are held at Mount Cotton Training Centre.

Defensive drivers are smarter, safer and may also be richer, as they do not have to fork out money on insurance excess and panel beaters bills. The course takes no longer than a day, but has benefits that will last for years.
