A Day at Dee Why

Published August 2nd 2010
If you're looking for some fun this weekend, whether you're on your own or have a gang of kids in tow, Dee Why beach has lots to offer.

Situated on Sydney's Northern Beaches, it's a nice alternative to Manly or even Bondi with some amazing surf, delicious food, kid's playgrounds, electric barbeques, nice walks and 2 great rock pools at the southern end for those who like to swim whatever the weather!

Dee Why beach is a beautiful and the grassed area along by the promenade is absolutely perfect for throwing down a rug, grabbing a beer from the esky and watching the world go by, or watching the die hard surfers catching the sometimes huge waves. Or you could set up a picnic at one of the picnic tables. The weekends see many cooking up a storm on the electric barbeques at the southern end of the promenade by the children's playground at the corner of The Strand and Oaks Avenue.

There is another kid's playground at the northern end of the promenade behind the surf club by the car park. If you live in the Warringah Council area and display a council sticker, parking is free. Otherwise it's charged by the hour with a pay 'n' display system. The cost is $25 per day or $5 per hour. There is more parking available along the seafront and along Oaks Avenue at the southern end of the promenade.

If you're all out of snags and your cupboard is bare, there are plenty of food options along by the beach front. Fish and chips from Seafood at the Beach, 12a, The Strand is to absolutely die for. The fish is so fresh it almost melts in your mouth, and the batter is light and crispy, just how it should be.

All along the Strand is a vast array of tempting restaurants, with most offering breakfast, lunch and dinner, some an all day menu. One of my favourites is Italian restaurant Stella Blu Ristorante & Liquid Lounge, offering sumptuous food all day, with a tapas menu in the bar. A Kids menu will ensure the littlies fill up after all that fun running around.

The promenade is a great place for roller blading or scooting or taking the dog for a walk or kick off your shoes, let the sand between your toes and walk up the beach towards Long Reef (without fido though as it's not a dog friendly beach).

Sandbar Cafe is another great eatery, offering modern Australian with a classic edge and a great kids menu. Nearby Deck 23, has a lower deck with bar food and the top deck has a great dinner menu including steaks, pasta and seafood. They also have live evening entertainment in the bar every Tuesday to Friday and Sunday from 4.30pm to 8.30pm.
