Shortly after World War Two, a grand ballroom opened in Bowen Hills. Christened Cloudland, the elaborate venue quickly became a symbol of elegance, hosting regular balls and dances and receiving a visit from Old Hollywood stars Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh in 1948. Sadly, Cloudland was controversially demolished in 1982.

More than twenty year later, in 2009, a namesake opened in Fortitude Valley. The modern day Cloudland (641 Ann Street, Fortitude Valley) is a stylish and cutting edge mega-club offering cocktails, modern dining and hip entertainment – but once a month, Cloudland recalls the elegant past of its namesake.

On the third Thursday of every month, Brisbane West Coast Swing take over the Valley night club to teach the art of swing dance. For $40, participants receive a half hour dance lesson, followed by a light meal and a glass of wine. For an extra $10, participants may demonstrate their new skill by joining a one hour dance session. Dance classes start at 7.00pm.

So throw on your dancing shoes, grab a partner and experience the old world glamour of ballroom dancing.
