Whether you are on holidays in Bali or you live here, a fabulous weekend brunch is always something to look forward to.

Having travelled the world for many many years, I have dined at many brunches around the world and it now takes a great deal to impress me with a buffet.

But this is exactly what happened at the Sofitel in Nusa Dua, Bali. Now I am a little reticent to build this up as I would love you to go in with no expectations (as I did, and be thoroughly impressed), however these articles are designed to fill you in, so here is my best, slightly reserved (as I want you to be excited) adventure at the Sofitel.

Entering the French buffet, which is held as a brunch every Saturday and Sunday, I was met by the most joyful staff.

I have to say it was one of the most fun buffet brunches I have ever been to, with amazing stations laden with food. But what really made it fun was the roving entertainers preparing fresh dishes, mocktails and entertaining us with their food preparation.

The children under 12 ate for free, which is always a big plus, but the biggest benefit for us with the children, was that they were highly entertained throughout the whole brunch with amazing stations for them to enjoy leaving us free to also enjoy a brunch. On the slightest chance they became bored, there is also a free kids club attached to the restaurant with staff to watch over the little ones.

The entire venue was set up with stations dedicated to different styles of food, including the usuals you may expect such as a wonderful salad bar, an Indonesian section, BBQ meats and cooked vegetables section, a pizza station. But it did not stop there. The fun continued with open flames where children could toast marshmallows, a popcorn station with all sorts of decadent toppings, an ice cream machine where the kids can help themselves with huge waffle cones and enjoy freshly made savoury or sweet crepes.

The candy station left the children gasping with delight and the chocolate truffles were sublime. Rows upon rows of creme brûlée line for dessert station along with pink mousses, cakes lollipops and almost every type of dessert you could imagine.

If this wasn't enough, there were ladies pushing around trolleys making fresh crepes suzette and others with shoulder straps holding an unusual contraption filled with ice cream cones.

There are several different pricing structures you can choose from: the basic plan is around 400,000rp or $40 - this includes free flow of soft drinks and mocktails as well as the full buffet brunch.

For 700,000 rupiah or 70 dollars pp you can enjoy the alcoholic package which includes all of the above with free flow of local wines.

If you prefer the completely decadent option for 129,000rp or $129 per person, you can upgrade to international wines, champagne and all of the above.

Keeping in mind children under 12 are free, this is really good value for what you get - the weekend brunch goes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Yes, you get to eat and drink for a full 4 hours and there's so much to see and do - you probably will.

It is held in the magnificent Sofitel Hotel, Nusa Dua, Bali and after you have eaten all you can possibly manage, you are most welcome to use the magnificent pools, swimming areas and recreational resort, completely free, whether you are a hotel guest or not. Just tell the towel attendant you took the brunch here and they will look after you. They also have a kids water park area with a water slide and a sunken bar should you wish to continue the cocktails.

Eaten too much? A few laps around this entire pool, is probably nearly 1 km, that should do it!
