Curtin University in Bentley, Perth, currently has a capacity of over 25,000 students on campus.

Most of these students are school-leavers and this concept alone is quite daunting to anyone over the age of 25 and undergoing a career change.

The Bentley campus at Curtin is like a small community that assists life on campus and it's always growing. The campus also offers:

• Academic support; accommodation, student guild, international and disability services, multi-faith services, counselling.
• Retail; book shops, computer shops and computer facilities, clothing and merchandise, travel agent, Ticketmaster outlets, hairdressers, optometrist, pharmacy, news agent.
• Health, beauty and general services; art gallery, careers centre, Centrelink, child care facilities, a new state-of-the-art gymnasium with advanced health, sport and recreation services.
• A delightful range of cafes and food outlets scattered throughout the campus.

I've always been a scholar, but in my teenage years I wanted to study everything. I was very distracted as a youth and for fear of getting bored, I wouldn't commit myself to a university course. As a young adult I was in a life-altering car accident, I grew stronger, became independent and commenced commerce studies. With my growing maturity came the focus and funding necessary for university studies.

Curtin has an online wealth of information for anyone studying and considering studying, regardless of their age, appearance, ethnicity, culture and physical ability. The university empathises with the dilemmas of those in the higher age bracket.

In this day-and-age, people are much widely open to everyone, regardless of who they are or what they look like. The university acknowledges students are each unique and provides a wealth of services to career changes and uncertainty in students' lives.

Luckily for me, I had already been studying for three years after my accident and praise the classroom environment for my public speaking skills gained. I just imagine each new class as having fellow students that share the common goal, and never once have I felt excluded.

Let me share a little secret…as I'm older than many of the tutors and lecturers, they also appreciate my knowledge and life experiences which are a little more advanced at times.

I take full advantage of the advanced Curtin gym facilities and the professionalism of the staff that have my health and well-being as a priority. Personal membership at the gym is highly recommended for those with injuries and a general fitness regime for disabled people is done by volunteers.

Curtin University embraces everyone who wishes to further enhance their education. It is only the individual who may isolate themselves by saying they're "too old, or too unfit". If you have enough self-confidence step outside your front door and embrace your higher learning, believe me, the campus will embrace you.
