A childhood without toy trains is a deprived childhood indeed.

Whether it's a few pieces of wooden track with an engine and half a dozen carriages or the full Thomas the Tank 5,000 piece whole-of-Sodor special, passing the time building miniature landscapes, laying track and sending freight and passengers off on their journey brings hours of enjoyment.

Some people are lucky enough to carry this joy throughout their life and graduate to building full scale model railways. They often gravitate towards other enthusiasts to share this joy and exchange knowledge.

The is a product of this meeting of model railway passion and skill.

Each year the Club holds an Exhibition to showcase the amazing talents of its members and members of other Clubs. The Exhibition is a great day out for true enthusiasts and total amateurs alike. My three and a half year old son and I recently spent an enchanted hour or so watching the trains whizz around the displays at the 2013 Exhibition.

Formed in 1982, the Club is led by a dedicated committee of seven experienced modellers and meets at the Club rooms in Chirnside Park every Wednesday night at 7.30pm.

There is a test track facility available to members at the Club rooms, featuring a large oval with HO, Hon3 and N tracks, as well as other gauges laid in a straight-line format, such as O gauge. Members currently model Victorian, Australian, British, European and American prototypes in scales from N to O and in narrow, standard and broad gauges.

If you have no idea what any of that means but you would love to find out, send the Club an email on [email protected], call or email one of the Committee Members (contact details here ) or drop into the Club rooms on a Wednesday night at 7.30pm, beneath the Chirnside Park Shopping Centre.

Membership costs $65 per year. It is open to anyone with an interest in railway modelling, from novice to expert, requires formal application and is subject to approval from the existing club membership.
