The opening scene sets in a metaphorical cupboard, imagine a windy day at a beach with the sound of ocean roaring in the background. Cristina's thoughts are disrupted by the voices of concerned family members and friends yelling her name, they want an intervention because they view her behaviour as mentally unstable.
Cristina (Emily McGowan) is an intelligent young woman who strives for more in life. She is unsatisfied with what the world has to offer and thinks there must be more joy to experience. Directed by Julie Baz she describes the play as an "experiment in comic magic realism". We join Cristina on her journey of self-discovery as she retreats inward in an attempt to discover wonder, reliving past memories from childhood through her teen years and to the present day.
The contemplative play engages the audience and is thought provoking as we start to think about our right to alone time, retreating from reality and the impact it has on those around us as we withdraw from our loved ones.
Some of the scenes are complex and complicated and needs the assistance of stage props and direction from sound and lighting. Cristina interacts with characters that morph and change depending on the version of that person is playing inside her head, some of which took a bit of time to process and understand – and was slightly confusing at times!
The characters include her parents Robert (David Jeffrey), Gwen (Sarah Plummer), and her sister Anna (Rachael Williams). Her ex-boyfriend and high school friends are all cleverly portrayed by the actors at different phases of their lives under the direction of Julie Baz.
