Have you ever driven past a place and thought, "when I have time I'll drop in there"? This is said quite often to John and Cecile Steenbergen owners of "Cooloola Rocks and Minerals" when visitors call in. Cooloola Rocks and Minerals is situated on the corner of the Bruce Highway and Lobwein Road, Kybong via Gympie.

Having begun their enthusiastic life of fossicking and collecting unique specimens of rocks and minerals by the old method of pick and shovel, these days their wares are sourced from all over the World with some acquired from personal collections as well. One room, shelved from floor to roof displays their private collection of rocks and crystals from their travels.

Over the years, I have purchased many large and medium sized crystals and a variety of tumble stones from Cooloola Rocks and Minerals as the business is very accessible on my frequent trips north of Brisbane. Such items as Labradorite from Madagascar, Amethyst from Uruguay and many other Australian crystals have been added to my collection.

Cooloola Rocks and Minerals is much more than just a shop of rocks and crystals, they sell a range of Agate, crystal clusters, Thunder Eggs, polished rocks, all coloured Quartz crystal, Ribbon Stone, Fluorite, rough cut rocks, petrified wood, fossils, paintings and arts and crafts. There are even minerals which mysteriously light up in a beautiful colour under ultraviolet light. There is plenty of room for parking with access for large vehicles such as busses and caravans.

Around August of each year, Cooloola Rocks and Minerals are host to the Kybong Rockfest . This festival started off with a small number of stalls and has more than doubled its size with a gathering of artisans and craftsmen displaying their rock and mineral related wares. Entertainment, food and camping facilities are available with a nightly bonfire and singalong.

2015's festival is the 20th year celebration and the date has been set from 31st July to 2nd August 2015. Sites for stalls can be booked now and more details can be located on their website.

So when you are next travelling north of Brisbane on the Bruce Highway, it is well worth the effort to call into Cooloola Rocks and Minerals and be in awe as I am each time I visit. John and Cecile are always happy to chat about their experiences and the properties of their wares.
