The owners of the idyllic Como Gardens in The Basin have announced their spring open garden weekend for October 17th and 18th between 10am - 4pm. These gardens are only open twice a year for the autumn and spring openings unless prior arrangements have been made with the owners for kids birthday party bookings or weddings.

What makes Como gardens a standout to most open gardens is not only the activities and attention to detail, but they have their own miniature railway that circuits the garden which is visible from the time you enter the property. Owners George Hetrel and his wife Pat decided to add the 650 metre miniature railway complete with station, three creek trestle bridges and an archway that the train runs through. The railway is a great way to see the garden and was certainly a big hit for our young children who constantly ask "when are we going back"?

After a ride on the miniature train we headed to the shed. George and Pat's Shed however is no normal shed, inside you will find some of the world's rarest motor vehicles, in fact there are 16 vintage motor cars in their private collection not to mention old motorcycles and racing memorabilia. The oldest vehicles on display include a 1896 Benz Velo, 1903 curved dash Oldsmobile and a 1903 type 56 Peugeot. Guided tours of the shed are scheduled in over the weekend so you have the opportunity to ask questions and to find out more about the vehicles history.

As for the garden itself, you will find 6 acres of formal gardens, manicured lawns, an ornamental lake and rain forest walk. The gardens have some historical significance with one of the trees in particular (Quenus Robur) believed to be one of the first oak trees to be planted in Australia after it was believed to be planted in 1875 after the birth of Arch Chandler who has always been regarded as the first white child born at The Basin. In turn this particular tree is classified by the National Trust Foundation. To find out about all of the rare and unusual plants in the garden it's best to join in one of the guided tours throughout the day.

Our favourite part of the garden was the fairy garden down the back of the property standing under beautiful old trees with sunshine streaming through the gaps in the branches and the leaves whilst the children explored and played in the themed areas based on Alice in Wonderland.

Como gardens will be open on the weekend of the 18th and 19th of April from 10am-4pm, Entry costs $8 for adults and children under 14 are free. Train rides are $2 per ride. Entry costs are donated to the local SES and St John ambulance.

Food is also available on the day with fresh scones being popular last year as well as the sausage sizzle.

The garden is located at 79 Basin Olinda Rd, The Basin 3154 Victoria
