Working in Seddon, I quickly figured out the best coffee in the area. Hint: it's Common Galaxia.

In fact, pretty much everything these guys do is some kind of special. But let's start with the coffee.

I've been drinking long blacks for about 2 years now. I used to only drink them if I couldn't get a decent almond milk, but I've built up a dislike for any type of milk in my coffee and really only enjoy it hot and black.

This also means that I've become one of those discerning coffee drinkers who needs to really enjoy the taste of the coffee because it isn't dimmed by the addition of some sort of dairy.

It's not a good thing. It means that coffee pretty much anywhere that isn't a hipster Melbourne café is going to be terrible and taste like dirt.

But I digress – the long black's at Common Galaxia, poured by their legend barista Frank, are probably the best I've had in Melbourne. They use Seven Seed beans, which probably helps (I'm really not that much of a coffee snob – I just want it to taste good!) and it comes across as mildly fruity and with a really nice zing! to get through my afternoon.

Moving on to other things they do exceptionally well: Poached Eggs.

Their seasonal mushrooms sautéed with chilli, garlic, thyme, walnuts, snow peas, Sanish feta and 2 poached eggs on olive bread is to freaking-die-for. I'm serious – I can only try to explain why it's so consistently good, and it has something to do with everything just complementing each other in a salty garlicky-buttery-perfectly-poached kind of way.

They haven't tried to do anything overly new with this dish: mushrooms, butter, thyme and garlic are time-tested best friends, and the Danish feta is smooth, salty and makes everything else pop.

The poached eggs themselves just have this incredible taste to them that I can only describe as the way poached eggs should taste. I need to know how they do it, because hot damn they are so good.

The walnuts are another little pop of flavour that goes perfectly with everything else, and I think I've said enough about how great it is. Just eat it.

I've also had the Avocado with Ruby Grapefruit, marinated goat's cheese, basil, soy almonds, red onion & radish on sourdough with a poached egg, and this was also brilliant. The flavours are super bright and fresh in your mouth and everything just works.

Their menu changes seasonally, so they have made some changes to their current Winter menu – but in the warmer months, they do a nice little chicken salad with za'atar-spiced cauliflower that really hits the spot. It actually seems more like a comfort food so it's interesting that they've taken it off, but it's great nonetheless.

A few months ago pre-vegetarian I had a bite of my colleague's wagyu burger. I'm just going to leave this here: stupidly good. My colleague still can't believe it's better than some places whose prime focus is burgers. Crazy.

And finally, they have a delightful cake cupboard that taunts me every time I walk in for a coffee. If I want a treat but also want to fool myself into believing that I'm being somewhat healthy, I'll order the flourless orange cupcake with cream cheese frosting or the rhubarb cupcake with cream cheese frosting.

Or if I'm feeling particularly sorry for myself, I'll hit up the homemade caramel slice. I know I keep saying that everything "Is, like, totally the best!" – but this seriously is one of the best Caramel Slices I've ever had. The chocolate tastes like Koko Black or Lindt and the caramel is rich without being overly sweet. I ate a whole piece to myself this afternoon and didn't feel sick, which is a feat in itself.

If you're looking for a new place to eat this weekend, try out one of the best brunch places in Melbourne's western suburbs. You won't be disappointed.
