Collected Works is heaven for poetry lovers. As 'Australia's only dedicated poetry bookshop' (see its
Facebook page), it stocks a vast array of poetry, literature and theoretical works from a multitude of countries, including Ireland, England, France, Germany, Australia and China. Located in the historic Nicholas building, which is famous as a hive of artists, designers and other creative types, Collected Works is certainly situated among friends.
Collected Works Bookshop
On previous visits to Collected Works, I have found many books that just can't be found anywhere else. From chapbooks by emerging, established, and underground Australian poets, to the classics of European literature, to the latest in obscure or cutting edge cultural theory and everything in between, Collected Works is a vital destination for the literary- or cultural-minded.
Poetry reading at Collected Works
Collected Works is run by an interesting gentleman who seems to care more about having a good conversation than making a profit. Clearly the patrons of this bookshop appreciate his approach, as the shop has been running since 1985 and is still going strong. In a time when many bookshops are going out of business, Collected Works seems to have remained relevant to its customers.
Collected Works holds readings and launches throughout the year. This willingness to engage with the public also seems to have contributed to its longevity. Check the
Facebook page for details of the latest events.
