For adventurers who are keen to walk to the top of Australia’s highest mountain, Charlottes Pass is the place to start.

Crossing the Snowy River, just after leaving Charlottes Pass

Drive to the end of Kosciuszko Road, where you will find a parking area about 500 metres below the summit. Then, hop on to the Main Range Track, which for 12.5 kilometres steadily makes its way to the 2228 metre pinnacle. Finally, follow the Summit Road down, on its 9 kilometre journey back to the very beginning.

This is a breathtakingly beautiful loop, showcasing as it does some of Australia’s finest alpine scenery. It is also very clearly marked, making navigation straightforward.

Pausing to soak up the view

However, a word of warning: even during summer- which is the only time that all but the most experienced people should attempt this walk- the weather is extremely unpredictable. Bitter, icy winds are likely, while rain and even blizzards are possible. Consequently, it is essential to take the full range of thermal gear, including rain jacket, beanie, scarf and gloves.

Admiring Lake Albina

Another point that needs to be stressed is the importance of waterproof boots. Firstly, you may encounter residual snow patches. Secondly, there will definitely be several water crossings, and although stepping stones ensure that they are generally easily handled, heavy rainfall before the big day could leave the stones submerged. If the snow or rivers make your boots wet and they’re not waterproof, you’ll be left with sodden, freezing feet for the rest of the hike.

How things look from 2228 metres above sea level

Make sure to arrive at Charlottes Pass no later than 10am, as it’s sure to be a long day. While the track is relatively benign (after all, it only ascends about 500 metres), 21.5 kilometres is quite a long way. Also, you’ll want to spend at least an hour at the top, savouring your big achievement.

More extraordinary scenery as the descent begins

The best place to spend the preceding night is in Jindabyne. There’s a range of accommodation, plenty of places to stock up on supplies, and it’s only a half hour drive. And it’s probably a good idea to spend the next night there too, so that you can celebrate!
