The City of Melbourne has really put on a Christmas extravaganza for families in the lead up to Christmas.

And all the fantastic events are totally free.

From November the 29th City Square might well as be renamed The Land of Christmas. There is a 9.2 metre living and decorated Christmas tree and a 'Where's Rudolph?' maze, where children can hunt for Rudolph and his reindeer friends.

Santa is there although he's a little early. I guess he is taking time out because he has heard that the children of Melbourne have been exceptionally well behaved this year.

He'll be there so that they can have their photo taken with him. The free photo sessions operates every day until December 24; then Santa really is too busy to hang around any longer.

There is also a Santa's Post Box, supported by Australia Post where children can post Santa a letter with their Christmas list.

The nearby Melbourne Town Hall is gift-wrapped and guarded by 3m-tall Nutcracker soldiers while at night it is the setting for stunning digital projections that tell a uniquely Melbourne Christmas tale. This amazing sight can be seen between 9pm -11pm each night. For more information click here.

This is going to be a remarkable sight for all the tourists as well as a treat for all the rest of us.

Award-winning pastry chefs from Epicure's Culinary Centre have created a complete gingerbread village which you can see at the Melbourne Town Hall from Sunday 1 December 2013. Pick out the iconic Melbourne landmarks in the gingerbread landscape including the Melbourne Town Hall, Melbourne Cricket Ground and Luna Park.(nominal gold coin donation which goes to Make-A-Wish Australia ).

There will also be a Christmas trail through the city. You can head off to the Nativity Scene and decorations in the central city, Docklands, North Melbourne and Kensington.

While it is all free there is of course a means to an end. Too many people swarm to shopping centres before Christmas and forget about the CBD which is in fact a fantastic shopping precinct. There will be a number of exclusive shopping events such as the Flinders Lane late-night shopping event on Thursday, November 28 and The Big Design Market on 6-8 December at the Royal Exhibition Building.

Social media users can snap their favourite decorations and events using the hashtag #inbetweenxmas . The best images will be shared on our Twitter, Facebook, Google and Instagram.

There is so much on at Federation Square including free family portraits seated in front of the fir trees that there is a whole article on it click here.

There is a great map of the events click here .
