For lovers of all things Mexican, it's time for the annual Cinco de Mayo Mexican festival. Get a taste of Mexican culture without the long, arduous journey.
Held on Saturday, the 3rd of May from 3pm to 12am at Riverlife Naval Stores, Lower River Terrace, Kangaroo Point, this colourful festival is a lot of fun for the whole family.
Cinco de Mayo used to be a day that commemorated the Mexican battle Puebla where the French were defeated in 1862. The army under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin experienced a surprising victory as the Mexican forces were outnumbered.
Now it is a celebration of heritage filled with pride at the restoration of national unity. Feast on salsas, spices, tequilas, sangrias and other Mexican delicacies while being entertained by music by Mariachi with live shows on the hour and Jarabe Tapatio or Mexican hat dancing.
Bring out your sandals and sombreros and join in the festivities. A standard ticket costs $65 and includes entry to Cinco de Mayo, 1 food and 2 drink vouchers. The food menu includes chillilada salad (ground chilli beef served in a fried tortilla cup with shredded lettuce, mozzarella, avocado, salsa and sour cream), barbequed lime and chilli pork (steamed with an avocado vinaigrette dressed Mexican salad), baked chicken enchilada (cooked in spicy tomato sauce with mozzarella, sour cream and coriander lime pesio) and baked vegetable tortilla casserole.
