Christmas is around the corner and Federation Square is poised to celebrate this biggest festive event of the year in style.
A host of family-friendly events will keep the local and tourists enthralled by the Federation Square's free Christmas program Spirit of the Square, which is one of Melbourne's most veritable December traditions. The month long celebration will commence on 1 December 2013 until drawing its curtain on the Christmas Day.
During the month of December, the Square and the Atrium will be abuzz with the festive songs and music, courtesy of the community choirs and local musicians.
A huge public art installation of more than 100 Christmas trees will be installed in the Federation Square precinct. Take a tour of this forest and find yourself exclaiming in excitement as the trees transform every week creating the setting for quirky patterns, mazes and secret hiding spaces.
Every Monday afternoon partake in free big screen gaming with the team from Freeplay Independent Gaming Festival. Note down the time, every Monday from 5pm to 9pm.
The Festive Foodie Market will be organised at the Square on 14 and 15 December 2013 from 11 am to 4pm. This fabulous Christmas market will enable you to make some last minute Christmas purchases or simply provide you with delightful retail therapy opportunities.
The month of December will also be the season for free movies at Federation Square. Bring a blanket or pull up a deckchair and kick back and unwind with classic Christmas films as well as chart toppers on the Big Screen. The important dates to note are 3, 10, 11, 17, 18 and 21 December 2013, from 6:30pm onwards.
On the auspicious day of Christmas, Federation Square will hold the Orphan's Christmas. Aimed at lonely souls who have found themselves in one of the settings made famous by the movies Home Alone and its sequels, the Orphan's Christmas will be a fantastic way to spend this wonderful day. A movie marathon will regale the visitors. Bring a picnic basket filled with goodies and find yourself a spot amongst the Christmas tree forest and celebrate the big day with fellow exiles. Festivities will commence at 11am and will continue until 6pm on Christmas day.
Due to its prime location, Federation Square is highly accessible both by public transport and by car. You can get to Federation Square for free by utilising the free city circle tram and the Melbourne visitor shuttle bus.
