A few minutes drive from
Mosman and 20 minutes from Sydney CBD lies Chowder Bay. It is located just next to Clifton Gardens Reserve and is also reachable by bus 244 from the city.
Chowder Bay was named after whalers who used to make 'chowder' from the bay's abundant seafood. The Bay was formerly a naval base and the area features historic buildings and facilities originally used as a Submarine Miners Depot. Today these buildings have been restored and operate as restaurants and for other civil use.
Chowder Bay offers a range of family friendly activities including walking tracks, beaches, artist studios, kayaking and scuba diving. You can snorkel or dive to see Sydney's unique underwater environment or just kayak around the picturesque harbour foreshore. Its good fun for families with children as they can play on the shaded playground equipment or on the sandy beachfront.
A great way to visit Chowder Bay is to incorporate it into a walk from
Taronga Zoo to Balmoral Beach. There are well-marked tracks along this beautiful bush walk and Chowder Bay is a perfect spot to have a break. If you go during the weekdays, you can also watch craftsmen from the Sydney Harbour Wooden Boats practice the age-old trade of restoring and constructing wooden boats. The special viewing area is set up in the boatshed.
Its a great place for families to spend some time at and discover one of Sydney's secret treasures.
