Stretch your entertainment dollar a little further this May. Melbourne has a number of entertaining, informative or just plain fun events that will allow you to have a night or a day out for under $40. You can have your whole month covered with explorations of theatre, film, beer, coffee or wine. With this list, depending on your individual choices, it's possible to find something great to do each week of May and be out of pocket only $100.

[SECTION]Audi Festival of German Films[/SECTION]

If your cinema interests extend beyond the Hollywood blockbuster or predictable Rom Com then the twelfth annual Audi Festival of German Films may have just what you're looking for. Over two weeks you can see latest release German film offerings at Kino Cinemas in Collins Street or Palace Cinema Como . As well as the movies you can also participate in Q and A sessions with some of the award-winning directors, editors and actors. Movies include the taut Shifting the Blame , the surprising documentary about German folk music, Sound of Heimat , and a German-language adaptation of Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huck Finn .

There's a huge range of inexpensive entertainment as part of Good Beer Week that will have you hopping. The program of events incorporates must-do activities for beer geeks, beer lovers, home brewers and beer novices, and that should cover just about everybody. At a host of venues across Melbourne you can learn about beer, attend beer tastings, find out how to make your own beer or enjoy cocktails made with the amber fluid. Beer has never been hotter, or should that be cooler?

[SECTION]Melbourne International Coffee Expo[/SECTION]

The Melbourne International Coffee Expo isn't just for the coffee connoisseur. 2 days of the event have been set aside for members of the general public to really get to know their coffee. You can watch latte art, learn about espresso, see the blind barista challenge, and the competitors in the World Brewers Cup. You can also see the world's best baristas in action at the World Barista Championship. The weekend highlight is of course the official after-party at Showtime events on Saturday night.

Mornington Racing Club is the venue for The International Cool Climate Wine Show 's public tasting event. The rest of the show - launch, judging and trade tastings - is closed to the public, but you can attend the most important part and have your taste buds and nose check out the excellent wines on display. Your ticket will also get you light snacks and a chance to vote in the People's Choice Awards.

[SECTION]Neon Festival of Independent Theatre[/SECTION]

The Neon Festival of Independent Theatre provides the best of Melbourne's independent theatre companies with the opportunity to present their productions at the Melbourne Theatre Company, while retaining full, creative control. The festival runs from 16 May to 21 July and includes five original productions. In May you can see Menagerie by the Daniel Schlusser Ensemble and On The Bodily Education of Young Girls by Fraught Outfit.
