A backyard game of celebrity cricket in Port Melbourne will be open the public to watch, and all funds raised will go towards preventing domestic violence.

The event itself will be held on the Northport Oval in Port Melbourne on the 21st February and all funds will go towards the Luke Batty Foundation. Following the murder of her young son by his father on a cricket patch in 2014, Rosie Batty has continued to raise awareness for domestic violence victims and their perpetrators.

In a statement released to the public, Rosie Batty said her mission was to give women a voice, empower children, and hold perpetrators to account. "Our goal is to end family violence using the voice of survivors and ensure the current statistics are dramatically reduced" Ms Batty said.

It's a social issueCEO of Domestic Violence Victoria Fiona McCormack said the community needs to take a more active role in preventing deaths of women and children. "This doesn't necessarily mean getting personally involved or providing advice but could include being alert if you suspect something isn't right and contacting the police on 000 if you believe someone is being hurt" Ms McCormack said.
"The police don't disclose who has contacted them when they attend a family violent incident" she said.

The announcement follows the death of two-year old Nikki Francis-Coslovich whose bruised and battered body police found stashed in the ceiling of her Mildura home last August. According to an article published in the Daily Mail , neighbours of little Nikki heard her stepfather yelling and swearing at her the day she was murdered.
Her stepfather John Tourney is accused of her murder, the article stated. A post-mortem examination found the toddler died from internal bleeding and her head covered with bruises.

Fleeing Domestic ViolenceFor those attempting to flee domestic abuse, finding long-term accommodation is not always easy. According to a report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, one-third of requests for housing are from domestic violence victims. The AIHW report also stated only nine percent of first requests for long-term accommodation were met.
However AIHW Spokesperson Tim Beard said the majority of those turned away received various forms of immediate support and were put on a waiting list."There was a substantial proportion of people beyond that nine percent who actually ended-up in longer term accommodation and having that stability in the end of the period who did not have it at the start" Mr Beard said. The AIHW report also found the majority of domestic violence victims seeking shelter were women with children.(Interviews conducted by Rachel Gray)

AIHW recommends people who are experiencing domestic or family violence or know someone who is, to please call 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732) or visit the 1800RESPECT website. This includes not only women and children, but those men who are also experiencing abuse in a relationship.
