Do gender specific awards make a difference?
Not that long ago women writers hid their gender by using male names in an endeavour to publish their work. J.K. Rowling is one of the recent authors who felt that they were more likely to find success by "hiding" their gender. Many more famous writers over the years have also chosen to disguise their gender – read about some famous ones
here.
In Australia, there are a number of organisations which encourage women writers – one being the Society of Women Writers Queensland. Every two years, this society combines with the other state women writers groups in Australia to recognise a woman who has made a distinguished long-term contribution to Australian Literature, with The Alice Literary Award.
This year,
Dr Clare Wright of New South Wales was the winner.
The
Lord Mayor's Writers in Residence program and the
Society of Women Writers Queensland will present a panel discussion to celebrate female writers and the Alice Literary Award.
Authors M.K. Hume (Queensland's nomination), Kristina Olsson and Shelley Davidow will join the conversation with Lauren Daniels, as they discuss the merit of gender specific awards and their relevance in their own writing careers.
It will be held at the Brisbane Square Library, on Saturday 26th November from 10.30 am to 11.30 am. This is a FREE event.
Weekend Parking is available at King George Square Car Park for $5.
Please book on (07) 3403 4166 to reserve your place.
