Pancakes are very popular and you can eat them at pretty much any time - as a meal or as a snack. Pancake Day is coming up but you really don't need an excuse to eat them, you can have them any day.
There are lots of different types of pancakes. Some are thin such as English pancakes or crepes and some are thicker like pikelets or American style hot cakes. You can make pancakes sweet by adding toppings such as syrup, sugar, blueberries, strawberries or other fresh fruit or they can be made savoury by adding cheese or meat. Sometimes honey or butter is used on top of a pancake or small pieces or fruit are added to the batter. Use your imagination, the options are limitless, try adding M&M's, grated chocolate or caramel sauce or even spread Nutella on after they are cooked.
Traditional pancakes are made with flour, eggs and milk, they are thin and served with golden syrup, sugar and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Hot cakes or pikelets are made using the same recipe, although the batter is thicker. They are smaller and thicker and usually served with butter or sometimes jam.
English Pancakes4oz Plain Flour
1 Egg
200ml Milk
Put the flour into a baking bowl. Whisk the egg, add egg and milk to the flour and stir in. Whisk all ingredients until the batter is smooth. The batter should be thin and runny.
Put a little oil into a frying pan, when the pan is hot pour some pancake batter into the pan. Tip the pan around slightly so that the batter covers the bottom of the pan evenly. After a minute or so flip the pancake over using a pan slice or palette knife, cook for a few more seconds until golden.
Slide the pancake on to a plate and serve with golden syrup, sugar and fresh lemon juice.
In a lot of countries pancakes are traditionally eaten on Pancake Day or
Shrove Tuesday. Shrove Tuesday is the last day before
Lent (the period leading up to
Easter Sunday) and Lent is a time of giving certain things up, so Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge and eat all the foods that are not allowed. Historically Shrove Tuesday is the time to use up all rich and fatty foods, so pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain ingredients that are forbidden during Lent.
