Here is a great family day out for Easter Saturday, the 4th of April. At Mannum on the Murray River, a Monster Market Day will be held along with a huge carp fishing competition. All the action will get underway at 10am, which leaves ample time to get there from Adelaide.

Carp are an introduced fish, and are destructive to our mighty Murray River. They chew at the sides of the river bank and cause erosion, and can also contribute to algae problems. They are indeed a pest and events such as this aim to reduce their numbers. Don't throw these fish back in the river please. They are better off going in your compost as they make good fertiliser. They are awful to eat as they are full of bones.

The carp catching contest is open to all ages, and there will be prizes for the smallest and largest carp. The judging begins at 2pm. Carp are fairly easy to catch, and there are plenty of them, so your kids will not be disappointed with not catching anything. Kids love to have a go at fishing, so it all sounds like lots of fun to me. I can remember entering a similar competition when I was a child and can still recall the excitement. There will be prizes for the smallest and biggest carp. To help you out for the day I have even done some online research for you. The secret bait to use is canned sweetcorn, and use a gold or yellow hook, not a shiny silver one. There are lots more tips here

This will be a wonderful fun day out for all the family. There is nothing like good old fashioned fun, and kids love to do anything around water. It will be most pleasant sitting by the river bank with a picnic. In fact if you like it there so much, you can have a chat to some reps from Mannum Waters estate, who are sponsoring the event, about land sales and a holiday house. Now wouldn't that be nice?

My tips for a great day out:
Find all your fishing gear and get it packed in the car the day before. This activity is more suited to school age children. The river bank is not a safe place for toddlers. It can be slippery and muddy with deep water at the sides. If you take very young children, don't let them out of your sight. Please take care with all children around water. Take an esky with plenty of snacks and water. And remember your sunscreen, hats and a comfy chair to sit by the river.

Mannum is easily accessed by the freeway to Murray Bridge and also going along the back roads through the hills via Birdwood or Mount Pleasant.
