It's late Sunday morning, you've just woken up after a big night and your stomach is rumbling. What you need is a comforting, yet fresh and healthy meal to give you the sustenance you require. But the idea of whipping this up yourself just seems too daunting right now. What do you do?

If you're looking for a spontaneous and relaxing meal out that tastes great; it can sometimes be hard to decide where to go. There are indeed a lot of cafes around Brisbane from which to choose. However, this plethora of choice can sometimes be more of a problem than a solution. How do you pick from the many places on offer? It really depends on what sort of dining experience you're looking for. For a simply sensational Sunday brunch; a pleasant mid-morning interlude; or an appetizing afternoon pick-me-up, I recommend Café Cirque.

Café Cirque offers a pleasant atmosphere whether you're catching-up with family and friends or grabbing a quick coffee or bite to eat by yourself. Simplicity permeates every aspect of this café, from its décor to the food. It is the sort of place you would choose to go when you want a tasty meal at home – but just don't have the kitchen prowess. The wooden floors and furniture combined with the floral wall patterns give this place a cheerful, homely vibe. You can kick back, have a coffee and perhaps read a magazine or even play one of the board games supplied to wile away the time.

The pace at Café Cirque is chilled which is perfect for a leisurely meal. However, this is probably not the ideal place for a meal on the run. You really want to have ample time to relax and enjoy the delicious food that this place serves up so well. Cirque offers an array of delicious, fresh meals and beverages with interesting and offbeat combinations of flavours and textures. The menu is filled with homely, comfort foods put together in creative and innovative ways in order to create dishes that are unique yet paradoxically familiar.

When I went for lunch I ordered sweet corn cakes with smashed avocado and tomato salsa ($13) plus the cirque relish ($1 extra) from the breakfast menu. Oh, did I mention Cirque does all day breakfasts? It's great to know that you can satisfy your morning cravings at any time of day. The corn cakes were deliciously soft and fluffy on the inside with a crispy, golden exterior. The contrast was delightful. Combined with the fresh avocado and salsa the flavours and textures all worked beautiful. The relish was also a sweet addition to the mix.

What I love about Café Cirque are the unexpected breakfast creations. For example, you can satisfy your sweet tooth with their French toast or buttermilk hotcakes served with either cinnamon baked apple, butterscotch sauce and clotted cream ($14) or grilled banana, chocolate sauce and macadamia praline (also $14). These decadent delights are perfect for an indulgent morning treat. Alternatively, you could opt for their breakfast pide with bacon, fried egg, fresh tomato, relish, rocket and dijonaise ($11.50). Breakfasts range in price from about $5 to $17 making it more than affordable.

Additionally, Cirque's lunch menu starts from 11am on weekdays and 12pm on weekends. You can choose from a selection of pides, sandwiches, burgers and salads. These start at $10 with the most expensive lunch item on the menu being the home cured beetroot and apple ocean trout with celeriac and fennel salad topped off with a lemon caper dressing at $16.50. At these prices eating out really doesn't have to be a luxury. However, taste is certainly not compromised by the affordability of the food.

Cirque has all the usual café-style beverages with the inclusion of some very tasty juice combinations. Order the carrot, orange and ginger juice ($6) for a drink that is refreshingly different. With something on the menu for everyone, this laidback café is sure to have just what you need to hit the spot. For this reason, next time you have an hour or two I suggest you head on over and sample something from the menu. The café is open from 7am until 3pm daily. Try Café Cirque for yourself and make your next meal out a deliciously satisfying one.
