Every now and again you get the need to spice up your house, and what better way to do this than with a new piece of art. You don't need a Picasso or Dali in your home to make it unique, there are plenty of places all over Sydney selling interesting works of art. We're asking for your help in naming the best places in Sydney for buying artwork, from galleries, to cafes, to market stalls. Help us out by letting us know what you think in the comments.

Obviously when we talk galleries we mean smaller commercial galleries, the Art Gallery of NSW isn't likely to be selling you their paintings any time soon. Thankfully Sydney is full of commercial art galleries showcasing talented local artists. A few to check out are the Aboriginal and Pacific Art Gallery on Dank Street, Soho Galleries, or Utopia Art Sydney. If you're looking for new galleries the Australian Commercial Galleries Association website is a good place to start, or you could pick up a copy of the monthly Art Almanac to find out about upcoming exhibitions.

There are plenty of gallery cafes all over Sydney, including the aptly named Gallery Cafe. Of course their are others to choose from like the stylish Artichoke Cafe, or Envy Cafe & Gallery, specialising in tasty food and contemporary Vietnamese art. You don't have to even find a gallery cafe to buy a good work, plenty of other galleries around Sydney will showcase art works from time to time, and have them available for purchase. Keep your eyes peeled for any good ones, and let us know if you've had a good cafe gallery experience in the past.

We know we said we were going to make your house unique, but at the end of the day there are some very cheap ways to bring some colour to your walls. Stores like TYPO and IKEA often have a large range of prints available, and sometimes they look quite good. Don't think you're going to find a one of a kind here, these are reprinted time and time again, and often copied from another work in the first place. We're not holding an episode of Australia's Next Top Art Collector*, if you find something you like there is no harm in buying. If you've had some good experience buying generic art let us know where.

We've touched on a few options, but if you know some more make sure you let us know. Owning your first piece of art can be a milestone in life, just like owning your first home, and sometimes art works can be just as expensive. Help us find some great places around Sydney to buy interesting works of art.
