If you're lacking in body confidence, then I have five words for you that will fix all that. Go see a burlesque show!

As an avid fan of the film Burlesque starring Christina Aguilera and Cher, I was more than excited to have the opportunity to see a live burlesque show, and having already attended a Gin Mill Social evening at Slide Lounge, I knew that the standard would be high. But what has prompted the surge in confidence in my own limbs was that unlike the Hollywood version, live burlesque features girls (and guys) of all shapes and sizes revelling in the beauty and art of the body.

The audience watched, awed throughout the evening as performers took to the stage, each with their own individual routine, interpretation, and look. None had what you would call 'perfect' bodies, yet each exuded a power and sexuality that intrigued and titillated both the men and women in the crowd. In short, each performer was desirable in different ways and was inspirational to watch. The women were empowered, they ruled the room and I can only hope I can manage to remember some of their moves for when the weather warms up!

Thursday 17th July saw two separate shows hosted at Slide Lounge. Noir Revue, a musical cabaret burlesque murder mystery held the stage for the first 2 plus hours, with Burlesque Idol following for the final hour. Each show was unique, the first a narrated journey, the second a competition of individual acts to be voted on by the audience and a panel of burlesque judges. Now whilst Noir was intriguing and extremely stylish; it was Burlesque Idol that caught our attention due to the great variety in performances. From bottom padding, twirling of white angel wings to a comedic interpretation of Disney's 'Let it Go', there was something for everyone and the variety ensured that the hour was full of amusement and enjoyment, and also the chance to share your opinion with the audience vote! And the response was overwhelming, it indeed was not us alone who valued the comedic element of performances with Mama Jugs being declared the evening winner with 'Let it Go', a send-up of the removal of binding & restrictful women's clothing.

If you are looking for an entertaining night out don't hesitate in booking an evening at Slide Lounge for any one of their shows, or track down Burlesque Idol which is currently touring New South Wales. Either way you will be in for an indulgent night that will raise your spirits and revive your inner temptress. Double show and dinner tickets (3 courses) are $90 however you can choose to just see the show only from $35 and pay for bar snacks if money is tight (very reasonable around $8 per plate). With cocktails coming in around $16, bottles of sparkling wine in the mid $30 range, keeping yourself hydrated is no more expensive than any other bar in the city, so lash out for some first class entertainment.
