If you're looking to try a new hobby that requires good hands, needs careful concentration, engages your imagination and doesn't require too much (if any) physical exertion, then you might want to look at building models from kits.

Adults as well as children can take up this relaxing hobby, and some seriously complex models can be tackled once you gain some confidence from building some of the simpler ones available.

The best thing to do first is to find a model shop in your area or browse some relevant websites to see what kinds of models appeal.

ModelZone has a nicely laid out website which is easy to explore and should give you a few ideas.

Of course, planes from wars past, such as the ones in these photos, are popular with a lot of model makers, but there are many more types available besides these.

Choose from ships, cars, motorbikes, trains, famous buildings, sci-fi models and more.

Of course, constructing the model is only the first stage of the exercise. Once that's done, it's time to get the paints out and get creative. This can be the most enjoyable part for modellers and is a great opportunity to really put your personal stamp on a piece.

Advice you often hear from expert modellers is 'don't give up if you make a mess of it first time around."

If you look at your work at the end and notice some parts are in the wrong place, don't be disheartened. Simply learn from the mistake and go ahead and enjoy the painting process. The best thing to remember is: start with a simple model and progress from there.

The whole process really can be a wonderfully satisfying and therapeutic experience and before you know it, you'll wonder where the evening went.

If you're interested in taking a closer look at the kinds of models available instead of looking online, you can find a list of model shops around London here.
