Brother Espresso has opened its fifth store in Brisbane at Maygar St in Windsor. The cafe uses Brother's own coffee blend from their roastery
Fifth Battery Coffee Roasters, and has recently unveiled an updated menu across all its locations.
From the outside, I wasn't expecting a cafe – more of a hole in the wall coffee stop. I was pleasantly surprised to find chairs and tables in an industrial-feel courtyard (think greys, beige and brick), and a floor to ceiling blackboard menu.
The cafe has a fairly extensive breakfast and lunch offering. There are eggs and toast options as well as home-made ham hock baked beans with buffalo fetta served on organic sourdough or tuna, avocado and cheese melts. Lunch includes salads, fresh sandwich and toasted Turkish combinations.

The Breaky Burger.
I went for the slightly fancy Breaky Burger, which involves two pieces of organic sourdough topped with avocado, prosciutto, vintage cheddar, an egg and aioli, and had no complaints. While my friend ordered the organic spelt muesli with vanilla yoghurt, fresh seasonal fruit and honey. We were both quite surprised at the price too – my meal was only $9 and I couldn't finish it.
Brother has sweet treats- muffins, brownies, orange cake and the like – and a range of cold juices at the counter. They also make smoothies and frappes and serve their signature iced coffee, David's Cold Brew Coffee Extract, which I am told is brewed daily from Fifth Battery beans. It was smooth and slightly sweet without sugar, cream or ice-cream – not unlike the brew at
Blackstar, if you've tried it.
It seems a laid back place, the kind I could see myself enjoying after a walk on a Sunday morning. Brother Espresso is open weekdays from 7am til 4pm and weekends from 7am til 2pm and there's usually parking in a street nearby.
