Little Bronte Russell hasn't had the easiest start to life.
In 2006, at the age of two, Bronte was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. Since then, she has undergone chemotherapy, several major operations and MIGB treatment (a type of radiotherapy) to reduce the size of the tumour.
While her initial treatments were taken care of at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, Bronte now has most of her follow-up treatments in the Andrew Love Cancer Centre, located in the Geelong Hospital. Closer to their home in Ocean Grove, this helps to ease the stress placed on the Russell's, and helps to minimise the constant travelling involved to and from hospital appointments.
As a way of giving back for all that the Geelong Hospital has given them, the Russell family launched Bronte's Ball in 2009, as a major fundraiser for the Geelong Hospital Appeal. So far, the money raised has helped several nurses to attend specialist oncology training and chemotherapy accreditation, helped to provide entertainment for children and teenagers undergoing cancer treatments, and supplied meal vouchers for parents staying at the hospital with their sick children. Much of the money has also gone towards the completion of the oncology room in the Children's Ward, which should be finished in April 2013.
If you want to help a fantastic cause, and have a great night full of fun and entertainment, it's easy to get involved.
will be held at
The Pier , Geelong, on Saturday 20 October, and promises to be a stellar event. Tickets cost $150 (which includes a 3-course meal and beverages), and legendary 80's musicians James Reyne and Mark Seymour will provide entertainment on the night. There will also be a live and silent auction and a major raffle.
Bookings can be made through the
Barwon Health Foundation (call 03 5260 3355) or via the
