Where is Brisbane's Cheapest Coffee?

Regular coffee drinkers will know the cost of getting your coffee fix can add up a lot more quickly than you realise.

The latest figures available from the Coffee Price Index (yes, this is a real thing) found that the average cost of a regular take-away cappuccino in Brisbane is now more expensive than both Melbourne and Sydney.

Brisbane sits at an average price of $3.61 compared to Melbourne's $3.43 and Sydney's $3.34.

The Coffee Price Index has also found that the average Australian coffee drinker will spend more than the average national weekly wage on coffee every year.

As of May 2014, the average Australian weekly wage was approximately $1450. That is a lot of money to spend on coffee annually. The more fervent coffee drinkers would be spending a lot more than that.

These are sobering figures for the hardcore coffee drinkers of Brisbane.

Anyway, all this got me thinking – where is the cheapest coffee in Brisbane? Is it possible to save some money on your daily coffee without resorting to instant?

Thankfully the answer is yes - If you know where to look for it.

There are some generous cafés out there that offer things like happy hours deals, 2 for 1 coffee and other quirky gimmicks that will save you money on your coffee. If you happen to stumble across one of these generous cafés, stick with them – they're rare. These deals, coupled with your loyalty are guaranteed to save you some significant coin over the long term.

My top 3 places for cheap but high quality coffee in Brisbane are:
1. Cartel Coffee

Located at 62 Mary St, Brisbane, Cartel Coffee runs the 'flip for free' happy hour between 2pm and 3pm Monday to Friday.

As the name suggests, your friendly barista will flip a coin when you order your coffee – guess correctly and that afternoon caffeine fix is totally free. The law of averages gives you a great shot at effectively half price coffee. Or better if you're lucky.

2. Bean

Bean café is located at 181 George St, Brisbane. Aside from the absolutely excellent coffee it offers, it runs the following all day every day specials:

Beat the barista at rock, paper, scissors between 4pm and 5pm every day and score yourself a free regular sized coffee of your choice.

If you pop in between 10am and 11am and 'check in' to Bean on Facebook, you'll get yourself a regular coffee for only $2.50 – a ridiculous price when you consider the amazing quality of the coffee.

3. Coffee Depot

Coffee Depot is located at 33 Charlotte St, Brisbane. Between 2:30pm and 3:30pm Monday to Friday, Coffee Depot runs its hugely popular 2 for 1 coffee happy hour.

No flipping coins here – just straight up 2 for the price of 1 coffee. You'll just need to line up a coffee buddy to go with you (unless you routinely knock back 2 coffees of an afternoon).

If you want to save money on your coffee habit without sacrificing on quality, there are options out there. You just need to know where to look.

Where else in Brisbane can you get a bargain price on a quality coffee? If you know of a great coffee deal in and around Brisbane, please share with our readers in the comment field above.
