A hush descends over the crowd as they strain to hear the noise of wheels turning on a grassy hill. It's time for zero horsepower racing at the annual
Brisbane Billycart Championships.
Held on Sunday 22 August at Carindale Recreation Reserve, Cadogan Street, Carindale, the Brisbane Billycart Championships will be a day of fun for the whole family. Junior races (from 4 years of age) start early in the morning and everyone including the young at heart is welcome to try their hand at steering a billycart down the grassy verge. There's even a prize for the best stack of the day.
For people choosing to design, build and enter a billycart into the championships, there are strict design rules and carts will be scrutineered prior to racing. Full details of cart specifications can be downloaded from the championships'
website. Race entry costs $5.00 with all proceeds going to charity. Admission for spectators is free.
As well as more cart races than you can poke a stick at, the Brisbane Billycart Championships also features a Mascots Race. Previous entrants in the Mascots Race include Brisbane Lions' mascot,
Bernie "Gabba" Vegas and Hog's Breath Café's
Hogster.
Market stalls and entertainment is also on offer throughout the day along with food stalls to keep you well nourished and hydrated during a jam-packed day of spectating. Travelling by
public transport, Bus Route 215 will lead you out of Brisbane and take you back in time to the halcyon days of billycarting.
