Nothing beats breakfast in bed on Mother's Day - hot buttered toast, freshly brewed coffee, and the Sunday paper - but celebrating this special day with loved ones at one of Brisbane's best breakfast buffets or brunches comes a close second. Whether your mum likes to rise early or sleep late, there is something for every mother. These are my top picks.

Victoria Park

Mother's Day in the Marquee at Victoria Park (Herston) is fun for the whole family. Mums will enjoy a beautiful buffet breakfast and afterwards they can browse the Marquee market stalls on the deck overlooking the city skyline. Children's entertainment includes a jumping castle, roaming magician, and face painting. The buffet breakfast is available from 7:30am until 10am. Price is $45 per person or $25 for children under twelve years old. Bookings close on Wednesday, May 8.

Botanical Cafe

The Botanical Cafe at Mount Coot-tha Botanic Gardens is another fantastic option for mums with young families. Mothers will be treated to a delicious buffet breakfast while the kids are kept amused by Mr Toot and his magic clown show and face painting. Cost is $24.90 per adult and $12.90 per child.

Shingle Inn City Hall

A special occasion deserves a special venue. Spoil your mum with champagne breakfast at the Shingle Inn , Brisbane's oldest and much-loved restaurant; recently re-opened on the ground floor of City Hall. Commencing at 9am, the special breakfast menu includes miniature versions of their most popular breakfast dishes such as eggs Benedict, banana deluxe, and freshly baked waffles, presented on a three-tier stand and served with a glass of champagne. Price is $45 per person. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Cloudland

Cloudland (Fortitude Valley) is another special spot, set in a gorgeous garden with a retractable glass roof. Mums will be floating on cloud nine at Cloudland's Mother's Day brunch. From 11am to 2pm, mothers will enjoy a selection of their favourite breakfast dishes plus a petit four dessert bar. Tickets cost $40 per person including a glass of bubbly for mum on arrival.

Regatta Hotel

Treat your mum to a special Boatshed buffet breakfast at The Regatta Hotel (Toowong). For the first time since re-opening last year, Brisbane's iconic pub will open the Boatshed for breakfast. Mums will be spoiled with a smogasbord of hot and cold continental breakfast treats including tea, coffee, and juice. Cost is $29.90 per adult and $15 per child under twelve years old. Sitting times are 8am and 10am. Bookings are essential.

Old Government House

If your mum prefers to eat breakfast in bed on Mother's Day, she can still have her cake and eat it too. Treat her to a musical morning tea at Old Government House , next to the City Botanic Gardens. Mandolins in Brisbane, Brisbane's best mandolin and guitar ensemble, will perform a selection of music; from traditional and classical to contemporary and folk. Morning tea includes a selection of sandwiches, slices, and cakes accompanied with tea. This elegant event takes place from 10am until 11:30am. Tickets cost $39.95 per person.
