Find out how you can commemorate this important national day
Australians in recent times have become very enthusiastic about the importance of acknowledging and commemorating the sacrifices of all those who have defended Australia and its interests; and a good thing, too. ANZAC Day has been commemorated continuously in Australia since 1916 through dawn services, parades and RSL and community get-togethers with mates and beer.
Below are some suggestions for 2017 Brisbane ANZAC events that will allow you to mark this important occasion and pay your respects formally or enjoy a more casual celebration of all those who have given, or continue to give, so much in the service of this nation. You can also go here to see suggestions from Brisbane City Council for ways to commemorate ANZAC Day this year.
While this is a ceremony for schools it is an encouraging and moving sight to see hundreds of South-Eastern Queensland primary and secondary school students in this solemn service. The 2017 event will take place at Brisbane's Shrine of Remembrance, Anzac Square on Monday, the 24th day of April from 10am to 12 noon.
The ANZAC Day Commemoration Committee (ADCC) will hold its traditional Anzac Day dawn service at Brisbane's Shrine of Remembrance, Anzac Square on Tuesday 25 April. As always the ceremony begins at 4.28am, marking the time of the original Gallipoli landings.
ANZAC Day Parade
At the annual ANZAC Day Parade people can honour veterans themselves or their descendants who march for those who have passed away or can no longer march themselves. This year's parade will commence at 10am on Tuesday 25 April at the corner of Adelaide St and George St in the city. The parade route has not been announced at the time of writing but check here closer to the date for full details. Bands featured in this year's parade include South Brisbane Federal Band, Massed Bands of Brisbane Brass, Bayside Brass, Sunnybank Brass, City of Brisbane Pipe Band, Queensland Irish Association Pipe Band and Brisbane City Temple Salvation Army Band. The parade is scheduled to finish around 12 noon.
Dawn services are held at many local RSL sub-branches throughout Brisbane and surrounds. They also hold their own local marches, services and commemorative events, some featuring guest speakers and offering post service breakfasts or hospitality.
A link to details of RSL sub-branches can be found here, so you can check what's happening in your local are this year.
