Brand Spanking New
A few months ago 80 new Australian writers submitted short theatre pieces to the New Theatre in Newtown. 14 were then selected to work with more experienced directors and actors over four weeks to polish up their work for a public showcase.
The result was Brand Spanking New, whose run ends this Saturday.
The final works include:
"monologues, short plays and excerpts from longer works: everything from cabaret comedy to surrealist farce, from tender confessions to brutal revelations."
Like most collections of new talent the result varies in it's quality, however the show is definitely worth the $22 admission price. You are also supporting young writers who usually have to live off a wage which would make a third world farmer cry out in despair.
Tickets from mca-tix. At the time of writing (Monday) about half of the tickets were already sold for Fri & Sat night, so get clicking if you don't to miss out.
Newtown has lots of great restaurants such as Oscillate Wildly and Atom Thai (and many cheaper options as well) so if you don't get to Newtown that often then take the opportunity to eat out.
Why? Stimulate your brain with interesting and entertaining new theatre.
WHEN: Anytime
WHERE: New Theatre, Newtown
COST: $22
