The intriguing thing about the
Boring Conference is that it looks like it's going to be really interesting.
The conference is the idea of a man called James Ward who had been looking forward to attending the Interesting Conference, a kind of underground movement where people come together to talk about things that interest them.
Unfortunately, however, for reasons not entirely clear, the Interesting Conference was cancelled. This led Mr Ward to casually tweet that perhaps he should organise a Boring Conference instead, which would hopefully be as interesting (if not more interesting), as the Interesting Conference.
His Twitter followers liked the sound of the idea and encouraged Mr Ward to go ahead and organise a Boring Conference. And so he has.
The inaugural Boring Conference takes place on the 11th of December at the Dominion Theatre on Tottenham Court Road. "Hang on a minute!" you say. "Isn't that where a Freddie Mercury look-alike clad in spandex prances nightly across the stage in the hit musical We Will Rock You?" Well, yes, it is. But the Boring Conference will be taking place in
The Studio in the Dominion Theatre, not in the main auditorium. So it's unlikely you'll be seeing any spandex on the night. Unless you're wearing some.
The Boring Conference has a growing list of speakers who plan to talk (for between 5 and 20 minutes) about things that on the face of it might seem, well, a tad boring, but on closer inspection are actually really rather interesting.
Participants include the Independent's tech expert Rhodri Morgan, Boring-Conference-logo-designer Greg Stekelman, sneeze-logger Peter Fletcher (he's been logging information regarding every single sneeze he's done since July 2007 and will be sharing sneeze-related data), author of
Queueing For Beginners Joe Moran, and Lewis Dryburgh, who intends to talk about car park roofs.
Others will be looking at the best way to arrange ties. Municipal plug points will also be examined, as will dust.
If you're keen to have a really interesting day out, the Boring Conference should be worth a look.
