ASSP Gallery Port Adelaide is currently hosting Janet Milera's debut solo exhibition 'Bookyanna Dreaming'.Talented artist Janet Milera, is a proud Narungga, Kaurna and Adnyamathanha woman, who was born in Maitland and grew up in Point Pearce with her family.
She has been painting for over 15 years and completed a Visual Arts course at Para West Adult Campus, studying watercolour, acrylic, portraits and still life drawings.Janet was initially an Aboriginal Educator for the SA Government before she changed to the Aboriginal Health Department earlier last year, in order to have more time to follow her dream as full-time artist.
She also previously worked with Pooraka and Prospect Primary School, running Aboriginal Art Programs for young Aboriginal students, aimed at maintaining their connections with their culture and cultural identities.Janet's exhibition 'Bookyanna Dreaming' explores her great affection for her land and her ancestors. She loves painting a wide variety of Aboriginal animals and dot paintings and the centrepiece of the exhibition is a nearly life-size painting of an emu, which features emu feathers.
"Growing up as a child, my father always took my siblings and myself out on the land to teach us how to hunt for food, where to look for food, and to look after the land, because that's where our ancestors had lived. My inspiration for the artworks I create has been influenced by my family, as well as the knowledge and insight my father taught me as a child. It has also influenced my connection to the land and his dreamtime stories" said Janet.
