On Sunday 17th April, Victoria Point's Volunteer Marine Rescue is holding a at the Victoria Point State School Grounds in Colburn Avenue. This has become a well-known event with people returning year after year for that sought after item. In fact, it is rare that stall holders do not dispose of most of the items they have for sale.

The Victoria Point Volunteer Marine Rescue is an association committed to Safety of Life at Sea and they cover the southern end of the Moreton Bay Islands . They provide a support system for recreational mariners whereby mariners can notify them of their intended trip, their departure point and time, intended destination, number of people on board, expected time of return and call sign or name of vessel. If your vessel doesn't come in at your predetermined time, then the Volunteer Marine Rescue has information to find you, if a rescue needs to be undertaken. Trip preparation notes are documented on their website so you are up to date with anything that needs to be done before your trip.

Members of the Rescue are all volunteers who are trained and hold radio and first aid qualifications. They work on roster system and are required to work some public holidays. If you are keen to become a member, information can be read on their website along with a Membership Application to be filled out.

Entry to the market is by means of a donation with proceeds going towards operating and maintenance of the association's rescue vessels and premises. Cost for site holders is $10.00 per site and there are no restrictions on the size the holder requires. You do not have to book ahead, as a site holder you can turn up on the day and pay the fee. The theme of goods for sale has always been "from a fish hook to a power cruiser" and anything in between.

A percentage of the takings are donated to the Victoria Point School's P&C Association in appreciation of their generosity in holding the event. The school operates a sausage sizzle with drinks also being available for purchase. Gates open from 6.00am and the market concludes at 12:00. From past year's experience, it is wise to get there early to grab that bargain you are looking for. For any further information you can ring the Volunteer Marine Rescue Base on 07 3207 8717 or an email link can be found on the homepage of their website .
