It was a cold, wet, quiet Monday night in Adelaide when we strolled along the main drag looking for something to eat. I had in mind pizza so I was lucky that this was one of the cafés available. It's a pity it wasn't summer because food is served across the road on the edge of the lake.

If you haven't been out to Mawson Lakes it's only about 20 minutes from the airport. Mawson Lakes is a little town that has been constructed around a man made lake which features modern art and is surrounded by walking tracks. On this stretch of the road there are a variety of cafes including Asian and Greek and a local hotel with gaming facilities.

The was a cheap night out especially considering the quality of the food and the helpful service. I noticed that all the staff were young males who were friendly and chatty.

On this night there were a few tables of young professionals typing on their computers and a meeting at another. There was a highchair in the corner and a newspaper stand so it looks like they cater for a range of customers.

The menu includes a large range of wines and other drinks, burgers, pasta, risotto, salads, chicken, seafood, steaks, and of course pizzas (from $9). The most expensive pasta is $24, chili or garlic prawns can be purchased from only $22.90 and steaks around $30. Fresh bread is served prior to the meals.

The kids' menu is only four favorites (Penne Napolitano, Spaghetti Bolognese and fish or nuggets with chips) but they also sell small pizzas and large bowls of chips for only $5.50.

We ordered two bowls of chips and a medium pizza. I was impressed they were willing to make a half and half pizza (marguerita and bbq chicken). I know they cooked the chips fresh but it was almost impossible to get them out to us so fast. They were lightly chicken salted. The kids said they were the best chips they had eaten in ages.

I'm not copying my kid's review but I'd say that the pizza was the best I've eaten in ages too! I loved the pizza base. It was thin and crispy as well as soft on the upper side. It was lightly brushed with a tomato puree, not a lot of cheese but the fresh tomato slices and fresh herbs really made this pizza. The kids enjoyed the bbq chicken pizza, which had generous amounts of fresh roast chicken, bacon and mushrooms. We noticed pasta dishes being served because the plates were piled very high.

I asked my two young fellow diners (budding food critics and Weekend Notes reviewers) for their opinions and they said:
'10/10… it was splendid' and 'I loved it. Everything was very good.'

While at Mawson Lakes take a walk around the lake. It's a popular spot for dog walks.
