Hidden down James Place, just off of Rundle Mall, a magnificent place filled with wonder resides:
Blackeby's Old Sweet Shop. If the magical sweet shop from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory could be recreated in any way then Blackeby's would be the answer.
Blackeby's Storefront
Candy, sweets, lollies, whatever you like to call them, they can bring out the child in almost anyone. With their bright colours and sugar hits, they aren't usually something we can grow out of. Blackeby's Old Sweet Shop instantly draws on this childlike desire, with a fun and colourful storefront that would not be out of place in Disneyland. It builds itself up so much, and it does not disappoint.
The back wall is lined with jars of delicious looking sweets, all behind the front counter, making them ever so much more tempting because we can't freely grab them. There is the perfect mixture of old and new, Blackeby's manages to maintain its old-style charm whilst stocking a range of new products that are unlikely finds in a truly old sweet shop.
These are things like poptarts, breakfast cereals, and unknown soft drink flavours. Imports from America and Britain are common in Australian candy stores, but Blackeby's range seems to outstretch that of other candy stores. Rather than just a box of Lucky Charms, why not try some Reese's Peices cereal? All of the flavours and brands that you've heard about on TV or from friends overseas can be found here.
Walls of Candy
Jelly Belly displays offer flavour upon flavour of jelly beans, and their home made fudge will hit just the spot. Collectors of PEZ dispensers will find characters not available on our shelves, and the child in you will delight and childhood candy bars you thought were extinct.
So if you've ever wished that the sweet shop salesman was offering you that scrumdiddlyumptious bar, or if Honeydukes was your favourite part of Harry Potter, then head down James Place in the city and lose yourself to your inner child.
Warning: Store may cause loss of cash and a never before seen sugar dependency.
