Biscuit Ceramic Cafe

It's probably clear by now that I like good food, and that for me 'good' means food that comes with tags like 'organic', 'locally sourced', 'ethically produced' and so on (see Leon, World Food Cafe and veg boxes).

So I won't go on too much about the food at Biscuit. Suffice to say they do tasty homemade soup, organic ice cream and a highly tempting selection of cakes made by local bakers (the brownies in particular stick in my mind).

These are all good reasons to drop in next time you're in the Greenwich area, but the real draw is the 'ceramic' part. Basically what this means is that while you sip your latte or wait for your bagel to be prepared, you can select a piece of pottery and paint your own design on it. Then you simply leave it to be glazed and fired, collect it a few days later and voilà - a unique addition to your home, or personalised gift.

There's a large selection of items to choose from, including mugs, plates, jugs, photo frames, animals, money boxes and seasonal decorations. Prices start at about £8 and go up to £24 for the largest pieces, with all the paints, equipment, glazing and firing included. It's great fun, and easy to become engrossed for an hour or more.

You can also arrange a ceramic-painting party, or host one at your own venue - there's a selection of packages to choose from.

Biscuit is an independent business, but if Greenwich is too far south or east for you, there are lots of similar places around town. There's Fired Treasures in Barnet, Art 4 Fun in West Hampstead, Smarty Paints in Wandsworth, Pottery Café in Fulham, Battersea and Richmond, and Ceramics Café has branches in Kew and Ealing.
